UPC-A (Universal Product Code) is the foundational 12-digit point-of-sale barcode standardized under GS1 General Specifications and ISO/IEC 15420. Established in 1974 for North American grocery checkout, UPC-A remains the mandatory symbology scanned at commercial retail checkout registers across the United States and Canada. Every UPC-A number uniquely identifies a commercial product packaging unit down to its exact size, color, and packaging configuration.

⚙️ UPC-A 12-Digit Structure & Modulo 10 Checksum Algorithm

A compliant UPC-A barcode is divided into four distinct functional segments:

›Number System Digit (Digit 1): Designates the category of product (0, 1, 6, 7, 8 for standard items; 2 for variable weight meat/produce; 3 for National Drug Code pharmaceutical products; 4 for in-store marked items; 5 for coupons).
›GS1 Company Prefix (Digits 2–6 or 2–10): A unique company identifier licensed directly from GS1 US or GS1 Canada.
›Item Reference Number (Remaining Middle Digits): Assigned by the brand manufacturer to uniquely identify that specific SKU.
›Modulo 10 Check Digit (Final Digit 12): Calculated mathematically: Multiply all digits at odd positions (1st, 3rd, 5th, etc.) by 3; sum them together; add all digits at even positions; find the smallest number needed to round up to the nearest multiple of 10.

🖨️ Production & Printing Best Practices

✔Print at 80% to 200% of nominal GS1 size (100% nominal dimensions are 37.29 mm wide by 25.93 mm tall). Printing smaller than 80% can cause POS rejection at major retailers like Walmart or Target.
✔Ensure high optical contrast: use solid black bars on a pure white or light yellow matte background. Never use red or metallic reflective backgrounds because red laser diodes will read red ink as white space.
✔For cylindrical containers (bottles, cans), orient the bars vertically ("ladder orientation") so curvature does not alter the optical bar widths.
