1. Official GS1 Standard Dimensions for Retail
For products sold at retail point-of-sale registers, GS1 defines strict dimensional specifications based on the X-dimension (the width of the narrowest bar or space):
| Magnification | X-Dimension | Width (incl. Quiet Zones) | Bar Height |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80% (Minimum) | 0.264 mm (0.0104 in) | 29.83 mm (1.17 in) | 20.74 mm (0.82 in) |
| 100% (Nominal / Target) | 0.330 mm (0.0130 in) | 37.29 mm (1.47 in) | 25.93 mm (1.02 in) |
| 120% | 0.396 mm (0.0156 in) | 44.75 mm (1.76 in) | 31.12 mm (1.23 in) |
| 200% (Maximum) | 0.660 mm (0.0260 in) | 74.58 mm (2.94 in) | 51.86 mm (2.04 in) |
Reducing the vertical height of a barcode (called truncation) below 80% nominal significantly degrades omnidirectional scanning speeds at retail POS checkout. Avoid reducing bar height unless physical package height makes it strictly impossible.
